Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and
community guide.

This week... punch another hole in your belt and make way for food,
glorious food, as the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival kicks off.
In accordance with the growing trend among festival programs, this
year's foodie fest carries a great many events under its umbrella
that are festivals in their own right.

Fans of cider can rock their apple-carts to the Yarra Valley for a
celebration there, while those partial to Asian fare can enjoy a
run of events at Melbourne Chinese Museum that showcase traditional
festival foods. Young'uns and caffeine fiends can also head along
to the Good Life Music Festival - it's nothing to do with Melbourne
Food and Wine but it is sponspored by Coca Cola, and that sort of
counts, I suppose, going by the many other food-oriented events
that "just happen" to be occurring during the big gun of food
fiestas.

As I mentioned in last week's Newsletter, he said while not
bothering to segue, the week began with a horrid cold that was
bestowed upon me most graciously by one of the children. It was a
curse that saw the kids homebound for the remainder of the week and
in the midst of their boredom, the 8 year old lass managed to
convince the 5 year old lad that she could read his mind by
cunningly fossicking his inner thoughts for gems along the lines
of, You like ice cream! and other glaringly obvious "secrets".

The fiasco truly hit its peak when the lass was positively caning
the poor lad in a battle on their respective Nintendo DS's and I
felt obliged to intervene by sneaking the lad and his gaming device
aside, hoping to fool her into thinking he suddenly had his game on.

It was all going well, according to her panicked shrieks from the
next room, until the lad waltzed out proudly (and noticeably
without his Nintendo DS to tell her that it wasn't me playing, it
was him, except he could do it without using his hands. Needless to
say the jig was up and he returned to me with a conspiratorial
whisper to say that she must have read his mind when she'd realised
he wasn't playing.

I found all of this hilarious, and strikingly familiar... and the
first thing I pictured after getting over a laughter induced
coughing fit was how poor old Penny Wong must have felt after her
recent stint on Lateline - "Ali More must have read my mind,
Julia... She somehow knows it's a Tax!"

I'm not staking a claim for one side or another, I'm just saying a
bit of fair play would be nice. We're not 5 year olds after all.

For anyone not quite clear about what I'm referring to, a full
transcript can be found below... Fans of Monty Python will
appreciate it.

That's not a Tax... It's just pining...
