Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and
community guide.
This week... the Year of the Rabbit also gets another look in this
week with Chinese New year festivities held in Springvale and Box
Hill, and those with a splash of colour to their skin can compare
ink with others at Rites of Passage, a festival that showcases the
work of tattoo artists from across the globe along with art, music
and even a nod to environmental awareness. Apparently the
difference between a tattooist and a tattoo artist is whether they
can freely design a pretty picture on your skin or whether they
simply trace an image with the needle.
I wish I'd known the difference between the two over a decade ago
when a hazy night at Crown had led to the dubiously rash decision
to sully a prime piece of real estate upon my chest. It wouldn't
have helped that the design I'd drawn had been long kept in my
wallet, possibly in preparation for such an occasion, making it a
little less rash than I claim when questioned on the quality. You
can take that one up with my rash and dubious id.
Australia Day also takes place this week, just in case it slipped
your attention. A time when we celebrate all that's great about our
wonderful country. With Indigenous Festivals, Citizenship
Ceremonies, the raising of flags, barbeques, music and more, it's a
day that reflects as much about our nation in the way we celebrate
it as what's encompassed in our rich tapestry of multicultural
backgrounds and personalities.
Personally, as far as Australian iconology goes, I'm impartial to
football and cricket, dislike wearing thongs - most likely to do
with karma after believing it my duty as an older sibling to pin my
brother down while wedging his socks between his toes - refuse to
wear "tracky-dacks" in public and also go as far as referring to
them as "soft-jeans" when wearing them at home, and as much as it
might irk Sam Kekovitch I'll always prefer chicken to lamb. None of
which makes me a cultural elitist, I'm far too fond of all things
low-brow for that, believe me. And nor does it make me
un-Australian.
If anything it makes me a dork who's less than agile, does his best
to pinch the chicken skin while no one's looking and likes to
believe he has a sense of fashion - something it took me years to
acquire after a stint as a teenager thinking a Pith Helmet went
with everything.
But I'm a very proud Australian dork, as is my son who also now
wears a Pith Helmet, of his own accord I might add - something that
must be hereditary, because while calling his right to do so
Australian at a stretch, it's certainly not the norm.
Here are highlights from the latest newsletter.
