Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and
community guide.
This week... the written word gets a guernsey with the return of
the Emerging Writer's Festival serving up another program of events
for all the budding writers in Melbourne - you know, the ones
hunched over those little black and red notebooks as they sip their
lattes in cafes, waiting for someone to ask what they're writing.
And before anyone is offended, I'll let it be known that I have
at least 60 such notebooks tucked away, so put away those angry
pens and leave my eyes alone.
There's also more on the writing front with the Indigenous
Literature Festival held in Eltham, while the St Kilda Film
Festival celebrates that other medium where a thousand pictures can
paint a word. One such film held as part of the festival brings the
two arts together with the launch of a short film based on the
illustrated children's book, There's a Hippopotamus on our Roof
Eating Cake.
I can't speak for the film, but having read the book I'd suggest
having a look. If anything it might inspire frustrated novelists to
put away that red and black beast and opt for a sketchbook instead.
Those who do so are advised to at least be subtle. A crocodile
scoffing pudding in a cellar just won't cut the mustard.
Here are highlights from the latest newsletter.
