Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and
community guide.

This week... all venues and events must continue to bow down before
the great and powerful Comedy Festival, so if things look a little
sparse on the festival front, don't be alarmed. And don't be
surprised if everything from art installations and concerts to
theatre and the lint in your navel comes with a comic undertone,
what with many events falling under that humorous umbrella.

Outside of all things funny, but nonetheless still fun, we have the
Mulgrave Fun Day with a great line-up of free performances and
activities for the kids. And tie me up then tie down if there's not
also the La Mirada Film Festival held at ACMI with a program of
cinema co-programmed by none other than Pedro Almodóvar.

And it must be school holidays because I'm wearing a Band-Aid on my
elbow having had an imaginary thorn pulled from my arm, what with a
rainy morning confining the youngest indoors with a dose of antsy
boredom. That was all well and good, but I was a bit miffed when
the other patients, namely stuffed animals, also received Smarties
as a condolence. All I got was his leftover mac and cheese after it
had been sitting there for an hour. Dignity restricts me from
stating whether I ate it or not.

Speaking of dignity, and a less than hypothetical lack thereof,
some readers might recall my talk of a house-move at the start of
the year. Truth be told, I'm still in between houses, what with the
lease yet to expire on one abode - something that's a mixed
blessing as it's now laden with the "maybe" pile of assorted goods
that I and my partner own, along with the recently acquired
"maybes" of her parents.

The dignity factor comes into play with my confession that I have
never been, nor will ever be, a gardener. I have what could
clinically be described as "Grass Blindness" - that being the
affliction of not noticing grass or how high it might be until it
tickles my nose. Needless to say, being a lonely secondary abode,
the house of a thousand "maybes" has a lawn that's more than
neglected.

Truly, it wouldn't suprise me to find someone in a beanie chained
to a weed in there, mistakenly thinking they'd be halving Global
Warming should they prevent me from mowing. And right now each
blade of grass is bristling at my comeuppance, what with an
Inspection in the cards this week.

Hopefully I'll get through the mass of garden before the inspection
date, but if not I've decided on two options. The first is to grab
a Comedy Festival guide and clumsily paste on my own event to the
program, hoping the lawn passes as performance art. It might just
work if I wear a Pith Helmet.

The second is to reveal the boo-boo on my elbow and hope they
believe I'm an invalid. I'm inclined to go with the second option,
just in case there's Smarties in it for me. Failing that, I'll
console myself with Smarties in any case, as there's bound to be at
least a few tucked inside one of the four "maybe" couches within
that house of shame.

It's the pros and cons of having kids, stuff and not to mention a
ravenous appetite and a less than hypothetical lack of dignity.

Here are highlights from the latest newsletter.
