Labour Day Weekend Edition - Melbourne celebrates Labour Day with a public holiday on Monday 9th March 2015.

Melburnians love March! From the 1st to the 31st of March, every day is chock full of fabulous things to do. This week is no exception with over 1,200 events in our What's On calendar including our very own Moomba Festival.

Labour Day has its origins in the eight hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

Labour Day is an annual holiday celebrated in Australia resulting from efforts of the labour union movement, to celebrate the economic and social achievements of workers.

Love Melbourne, Love Moomba

Moomba Festival

A celebrated part of the Melbourne events calendar for 60 years, Moomba will be back with an exciting program of events and family entertainment, making Melbourne the ideal place to be for the Labour Day long weekend.

Held over four days, the festival attracts more than one million visitors to the sun-soaked banks of the Yarra to share in the vibrancy and spirit of our much loved city.

Birdman Rally

The Birdman Rally will be back for another year of splashes, spills and thrills as everyday Melburnian's dress to impress and flap to fly - or fall, all in the name of charity.

Whether it be with the assistance of a fan-dangled flying machine or simply super-hero strength, these courageous souls won't get their feathers in a fluster! Leaping into the unknown they will hurtle themselves off the Birdman platform, aiming to be the victor and 'fly' furthest into the drink of the awaiting Yarra River.

Join fellow competitors and the huge crowds who line the banks of the Yarra every year to experience the Moomba Birdman Rally spectacle. This serious fun is for a good cause, with each jumper raising money and awareness for their nominated charities.

Design, Innovation and the Australian Car

Shifting Gear

In a first for an Australian art institution, the National Gallery of Victoria hosts an exhibition of cars in 2015. Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car presents some of our most iconic vehicles as objects of art and design.

This exhibition celebrates Australia’s important and proud history of automobile design and engineering and reflects on the heyday of the Australian car industry. It also looks to the future of the automobile industry in this country and the shift from manufacturing, which has primarily serviced a local market, to being a global contributor through specialist expertise.

70th Birthday Celebration

Thomas & Friends™

Thomas & Friends™ are hosting the ultimate 70th birthday celebration at Flinders Street Station, with a huge life-sized Thomas birthday cake and pop-up shop.

Thomas & Friends™ has been a much loved character for generations of Australian boys and girls. To honour 70 years of friendship, friends of all ages are invited to join the celebrations from 1pm on 5 March to 10 March, 2015, to visit the life-size replica Thomas cake and take their photograph with the enormous creation.

Measuring over 3 metres long and 1.5 metres high, the bespoke cake is created by Christopher Montebello, founder of Melbourne bakery Let Them Eat Cake.
